Proper Cleaning and Care of Gloss Speakers and Subwoofers
August 01, 2014When you invest in a gloss finish on a subwoofer or speakers, there’s no shame in wanting to keep it looking great. Improper cleaning can damage the finish, though – so proper cleaning techniques and materials are critical to maintaining a perfect finish.
The good news is that you don’t need expensive supplies or cleaners, you just need the right ones.
Cleaning and maintaining your gloss finish
- Start by making sure there is no debris stuck to the surface which could cause scratches. A quick burst from a can of keyboard duster can help safely remove debris.
- Once clear of debris, the cabinet can be gently cleaned with a new microfiber duster to lift dust and other micro-contaminants from the surface.
- If further cleaning is necessary to remove fingerprints or other oils, gently wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. To dampen the cloth, use water or a mild ammonia-free cleaner. Never use cleaners which contain ammonia, alcohol, bleach or abrasives. Wipe in straight, long-strokes that follow the same direction, and avoid using a swirling motion.
- To remove light swirl marks, follow the steps above and then apply a high-end automotive polish rated safe for clearcoats. Use light pressure and avoid polishing edges or corners.
- To maintain that glossy look, use an automotive finishing spray rated safe for clearcoats, and gently apply with microfiber cloth.
Rubber surround elements can be treated with an automotive cleaner rated safe for rubber and vinyl. Never spray directly onto the surround or cone – always spray on a microfiber cloth and then gently wipe only the rubber surround.
